The HKDSE, IB, A-Level and international-school route, private or independent schools and international curricula lead to different qualifications, costs and university options. Age, curriculum continuity, safeguarding and housing come before brand.

SCHOOL

School route and entry point

Compare local, Direct Subsidy Scheme and international schools by curriculum, Chinese-language expectations, admissions tests, fees and university destination.
Compare the final qualification, subject range, progression record and support for international students.
For a transfer, map completed subjects against the destination curriculum before accepting an offer.

ENTRY

Admission and English readiness

Admissions may use transcripts, age or year placement, English and Mathematics tests, interviews and references. Non-local undergraduates generally apply directly to universities under non-JUPAS or international routes; postgraduate applications are programme-specific.
An English minimum is not the same as classroom readiness in essay writing, discussion and timed assessment.
Confirm whether the school provides language support without delaying progression into required subjects.

COST

Fees, housing and safeguarding

Compare tuition, hall availability, off-campus rent, deposits, transport, insurance and travel. Housing is often the largest variable.
Budget application, enrolment, tuition, activities, books, transport, insurance, housing, guardianship and holiday travel separately.
For minors, verify the legal guardian, emergency contact, accommodation checks and school reporting arrangements.

VISA

Visa and work restrictions

Non-local students need an admission offer, sponsor arrangements and financial evidence for a study entry permit. Mainland applicants follow the relevant Mainland application process.
A student visa is tied to genuine study and attendance. Course or provider changes can require formal approval or a new application.
Do not use part-time work to make a minor student's financial plan viable.

COMPLETION

Assessment and progression difficulty

Compare continuous assessment, final examinations, coursework, practical work and subject-selection rules.
University progression depends on the completed qualification and subjects, not only the school attended.
Recheck Mathematics, Science, portfolio or language prerequisites before the final school-year subject choices.

Evidence note: Comparable international-student graduation rates are rarely published at school level; this guide uses verified curriculum and progression requirements instead.

The four-year local degree and self-financing pathways system includes institutions and credentials with different admissions, recognition, cost and employment implications. Compare the programme—not only the university name.

Institution and application strategy

Verify the local accreditation status, awarding body, funding status, campus and whether the programme qualifies for the intended non-local graduate route.
Non-local undergraduates generally apply directly to universities under non-JUPAS or international routes; postgraduate applications are programme-specific.
Remove programmes with unmet prerequisites, then build reach, target and safer groups using programme-level evidence.

ENTRY

Academic and language requirements

Requirements vary by qualification, programme and applicant route; a country-wide IELTS number is misleading.
Check overall and component English scores, test validity and whether a waiver or medium-of-instruction evidence is accepted.
Medicine, Engineering, Computing, Economics, Architecture and Art commonly add subject, test, interview or portfolio gates.

Compare credit load, compulsory modules, grade progression, resits, placements, capstone and maximum candidature.
Portfolio programmes require process evidence; team projects must identify the student's own contribution.
An institution-wide completion rate cannot predict one programme or one international student's result.

CAREER

Student work and post-study route

Eligible non-local students receive a No Objection Letter. Temporary exemptions and work conditions can change, so the current NOL and Immigration Department rules control.
Eligible recent non-local graduates may apply under IANG without a job offer within six months of graduation; current rules normally grant an initial 24-month stay.
Employment outcomes are cohort evidence, not a visa promise. Regulated professions may also require registration or licensing.

03 · Postgraduate

Choose a Hong Kong SAR master's by outcome, evidence and completion risk

Coursework, research and professional degrees differ in prerequisites, supervision, assessment and career use. A short programme can compress study, internships and recruitment into the same period.

ROUTE

Coursework, research and professional routes

Coursework degrees rely on modules, examinations and projects; research degrees require supervisor fit, methods and a thesis.
Professional programmes may include accreditation, placement or licensing requirements.
For a discipline change, close prerequisite gaps with verifiable courses, projects, research or employment evidence.

ADMISSION

Application evidence and English

Non-local undergraduates generally apply directly to universities under non-JUPAS or international routes; postgraduate applications are programme-specific.
Check whether GRE, GMAT, portfolio, interview, references, research proposal or professional experience is required or strategically useful.
A medium-of-instruction letter is not a universal English waiver; follow the exact programme rule.

Research completion depends on progress and examination; coursework completion depends on dense assessment and group work.
